About

Years shipping software Established 2001 Still answering the email

One person, twenty-five years, still shipping.

Pariahware, Inc. has been an independent software company since 2001. It is me, Christian "Thor" Miller, and it always has been.

The studio

Bluff City, Tennessee

Pariahware incorporated in 2001 and has not stopped since. That is a long time in this business — long enough to have shipped for platforms that no longer exist, in languages I would not choose today, for clients who have since been acquired twice over.

What it has never been is a team. There are no account managers, no project coordinators, and no junior developer doing the actual work behind a senior name on the invoice. When you email Pariahware, the person who answers is the person who writes the code. That is the whole pitch, and after twenty-five years it is still the part clients mention.

The company started in North Carolina and is now based in Bluff City, Tennessee.

How I build

Native, twice

Every product here that runs on more than one platform is written more than once. The iOS and Mac versions are Swift. The Android version is Kotlin. There is no shared cross-platform layer, and that is a deliberate choice rather than an accident of history.

Cross-platform frameworks trade away the thing that makes an app feel like it belongs on the device it is running on. Writing it twice costs more of my time and produces two apps that each feel correct. What actually gets shared is the part that matters: the database schema, the wire format, and the test fixtures, so the two builds agree about the data even though they disagree about everything else.

Where the server is concerned I am less precious about it. It all depends on where the data lays.
